We take a lot of photos with our iPhones and even DSLRs and other cameras. Photos are great for capturing memories with others, or when you just want to get a snapshot of something beautiful. Photos on Mac can help you keep all of your photos in one place, and even help you organize them.
May 07, 2015 A window will pop up with a number, which in my Mac’s case was over 236GB between a number of different photo libraries — Apple’s Photo Booth, Aperture, iPhoto, and Photos, just to name a few. How to add pictures and videos to albums
If you have a lot of photos and videos, one of the simplest and easiest ways to start organizing everything is to make use of albums, especially when you give them good names. And if you use iCloud Photo Library, all of your albums in Photos for Mac get synced to your iOS devices too.
![100gm mac photos library location 100gm mac photos library location](/uploads/1/3/3/2/133298397/333987182.jpg)
- Launch Photos on your Mac.
- Click on Photos in the sidebar, under the Library section.
- Pick out the photos you want to add to an album, either new or existing.
- Hold down the command key on your Mac and click to select multiple photos.
- Right-click on your chosen photos and videos.
- Move the cursor to Add to.
- You can choose an existing album, or create new album.
- If making a new album, give it a good, easy-to-remember name.
Optionally, you can make a new album at any time by clicking the + button that appears in the sidebar next to My Albums. Drag-and-drop the albums in whatever order you want to rearrange them in the sidebar.
How to organize albums and folders
When you have a lot of albums, it may be better to clean it all up by organizing albums into folders, which are like collections of albums. It's easy to do.
- Launch Photos on your Mac.
- Either right-click on My Albums in the sidebar, or hover above and then click on the + button that appears next to My Albums.
- Click New Folder.
- Give your folder a name.
- Drag the albums that you want into that folder.
How to use Smart Albums
Smart Albums are like regular albums, but smarter, obviously. They're great for helping you quickly organize images without the need of manually adding each one to an album because it's all automated.
- Launch Photos on your Mac.
- Right-click on My Albums or click the + button that appears next to My Albums.
- Select New Smart Album.
- Give your Smart Album a name.
- Choose the parameters for your Smart Album.
- Click OK to confirm.
Smart Albums have a large number of different parameters, such as photos, faces, aperture, ISO, Live Photo, RAW, Portrait, and more. With all of these options, you can create many different Smart Albums to suit whatever it is you need.
If you're not satisfied with the Smart Album, you can always tweak the settings by clicking on the gear icon that's next to the Smart Album's title, then re-select the parameters you want to use.
Unfortunately, Smart Albums do not sync to your other devices through iCloud Photo Library, as they're only available on your Mac.
How to navigate Photos for Mac faster with the sidebar
The Sidebar in Photos is a great way to quickly jump between various areas in Photos quickly and easily. Plus, it helps you find albums that may otherwise be hidden, so this was a design choice made by Apple.
However, if you are running macOS Sierra and older, you can actually hide or unhide the sidebar as you wish.
- Launch Photos on your Mac.
- Click on View in the menu bar.
- Select Show Sidebar in the menu.
- The sidebar will appear on the left side of the screen.
- Follow the steps above to hide it (make sure Show Sidebar is unchecked).

How to create a new library with Photos for Mac
![Mac Mac](/uploads/1/3/3/2/133298397/988242669.jpg)
You can create a new library for your photos at any time with Photos for Mac. To do so, make sure that you quit Photos and reopen it with the following method to get the Library options.
- Hold down the Option key on your keyboard.
- Double-click on Photos on your Mac.
- Click on the Create New button in the Choose Library window.
- Name your Library.
- Click OK.
You've now created a brand new Photos Library. Unfortunately, there is no easy way to migrate over photos and video, so you will need to export the content you want, and then import it back into the new library.
How to switch between Libraries in Photos for Mac
When you create a new library, you may still want to go back to a previous library for something. Open system library mac. Fortunately, it's easy to switch between multiple libraries.
- Make sure that Photos is not open (quit if it is).
- Hold down the Option key on your keyboard.
- Double-click on Photos.
- Click on the name of the library you want to open.
Voilá! Just make sure to repeat this process each time you want to switch to a different Photo library.
How to move your Photos library to an external hard drive
If you're low on storage space on your Mac, you can just move your Photos Library to an external hard drive. Keep in mind though, that you will need to have this external drive plugged in to access your Photos Library, even if you have iCloud Photo Library enabled. And you aren't able to create a second Photos Library that has iCloud Photo Library enabled on your Mac, so be wary.
- Launch a Finder window on your Mac.
- Click on the Mac hard drive (Macintosh HD) in the sidebar.
- Double-click on the Users folder.
- Double-click on your username.
- Double-click on your Pictures folder.
- Click on the Photos Library file and then drag it to your external hard drive in the sidebar.
This process may take a while, depending on how big your Photos library is.
A note on reference libraries
The Photos app technically supports the management of images that aren't locally stored within its library — that is, you can keep a set of images in a folder called 'October Trip' and manage them within Photos without having to make a separate copy of them. You can do this by navigating to Photos > Preferences from the menu bar, selecting the General tab, and unchecking the 'Copy items to the Photos library' box under Importing.
That said, reference libraries won't play nicely with iCloud Photo Library users; you may run into problems when syncing, or not be able to sync at all. So if you plan on using a reference library, you'll have to opt out of iCloud Photo Library.
I also didn't have any luck getting referenced files to sync properly with Photos — I'd delete a photo, but the reference file would stay in its original location, even after deleting it from the 'Recently Deleted' folder. Not sure if that's a bug or just not how Photos wants us managing referenced photos, but worth noting.

Should we leave individuals to figure out the best way to make health rather than weight gains, or should the food industry be forced to pick up the slack? Ann Arnold investigates.
For NSW Minister for Healthy Lifestyles Kevin Humphries, the solution to his state's obesity and related health problems lies with his constituents taking personal responsibility for their diets.
'Some of the [bad] raps the food industry gets are sometimes ill-founded,' Humphries told a gathering of 300 industry, consumer and public health representatives organised by NSW Health.
'When it comes to issues around food integrity and lifestyle, we need to peel back the layers and target personal responsibility in particular, and community responsibility.'
Personal responsibility is the mantra of Australia's conservative governments. In the domain of preventative health, and the obesity epidemic, that concept translates as 'healthy lifestyles'. This is the idea that there is no need for government to control, or overly interfere in, what foods people eat. It's simply a matter of educating through awareness campaigns (rather than regulatory action), and balancing any poor dietary intake with physical activity.
As it happens, that's also the approach of large sectors of the food industry. The Kellogg's breakfast cereal Nutri-Grain pitches strongly to the teenage market. Its boxes currently feature young, active, sporty people along with the question: 'What fuels you?' (Answer well and you could win a GoPro camera.) As with Nutri-Grain's long-running 'Iron Man' association, it's a clever side-stepping away from a direct health claim that nevertheless associates Nutri-Grain with fitness.
The healthy lifestyle notion is intended to counter a 'healthy foods' focus (which might require a new level of personal responsibility from food companies).
One such scheme is the Health Star Rating - a proposed front-of-pack labelling for most edible products on supermarket shelves. To give people a clearer sense of what they are buying, food products would be rated from half a star to five stars, on their sugar, salt and fat content, with the option of additional information being provided by the manufacturer.
It was controversy surrounding a website associated with this scheme that ultimately led to the resignation of Alastair Furnival, the former chief of staff to Assistant Minister for Health Fiona Nash. Gary Dawson, the CEO of the Australian Food and Grocery Council, had rung Senator Nash's office and said he did not think the website should be up yet - it was not ready, and industry had not been previously notified. (In fact none of the parties involved in the site's development had been previously notified. They were all told by email the day it went up.)
It was revealed Furnival was still co-owner of a lobbying company which had previously represented Mondelez, a company which owns Cadbury and Kraft. The managing director of Mondelez is on the board of the Food and Grocery Council. It has been established in a Senate hearing that at some point after taking Dawson's call, Furnival phoned the Department of Health and instructed the website be taken down. One month after those events, Kevin Humphries gave the opening address at the food forum organised by NSW Health. With a diverse audience keenly interested in the biggest food policy development in some time - and the biggest food-related political scandal in a long time - Humphries's position on food labelling was not clear:
We move around issues on labelling, I've got no issues with that, what goes into our foodstuffs, how it's presented, how we educate and advocate for people in that space.
Kevin Buckett, on the other hand, was enthusiastic about the star ratings. South Australia's director of public health and the new chair of the star rating system's national oversight committee told the same forum it would be a wake-up call to industry. And an opportunity:
It's a voluntary system, and there are massive opportunities for marketing. Because if your food is healthy you will get a star rating system with a highly credible government sanctioned label on it, which . will be accepted and trusted by the consumer to indicate that the product actually is healthy.
If it isn't a healthy product, stop telling people it is.
One of the great hopes for the star rating system is that it will prompt food manufacturers to 're-formulate' - industry jargon for changing the recipe. Initially intended as a voluntary scheme, a health ministers' forum in June last year unexpectedly declared it should be made mandatory if there was not enough take-up within two years.
Food fight
Read and listen to Ann Arnold's Background Briefing report into the deep links between 'big food' and the government.
That spooked the food industry. The powerful Food and Grocery Council, the peak body for the manufactured food sector, has made it clear it opposes aspects of star rating, citing the expense of changing packaging, and perceived anomalies within the system. It wants a full cost-benefit analysis, which is now underway.

Presumably also of concern to the industry is the fact that when Britain introduced its traffic light labelling system, sales went down for foods that got a red light.
In the current political climate, it seems less likely that the scheme will be made mandatory. In his Ministerial Statement on deregulation on March 19, Prime Minister Tony Abbott said:
Like a fence at the top of a cliff, sometimes regulation is necessary, but there's a limit to what government should do to protect us from ourselves.
More regulation is not the solution to every corporate, community or personal failing. Sometimes, we just have to accept that mistakes are inevitable and that misfortunes are unavoidable.
Can it be left to individuals to figure out the best way to make health gains, and not weight gains? Bruce Neal, from the George Institute of Global Health, and Professor of Medicine at Sydney University, thinks not.
He told the NSW Food Forum that a British program to reduce salt intake - which included the threat of industry regulation - had resulted in all foods sold in Britain now being 10 per cent less salty:

All foods have to be healthier. That is how you will get public health gains.
You won't get it with . trying to persuade the industry to try and do the right thing, because you're up against an industry that spends billions on advertising to try and persuade you to do the wrong thing.
